2024 Week 0 12-team College Football Playoff rankings prediction
In the biggest shake-up we've ever seen to the College Football Playoff predictions after Week 0 of any season in the CFP era, it's worth taking a look at the updated rankings and bracket for the 12 teams. Before Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian even reached the regular season opener in Week 1 against the Colorado State Rams on Aug. 31 at DKR, there was a major game-changer in the CFP landscape during Week 0.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets pulled off a big upset against the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles in the last minute of an important matchup in the ACC that was played in Dublin, Ireland, last weekend. Florida State was a popular pick by many in the media and among college football fans on social media for the expanded 12-team CFP field during the preseason.

And unless something drastic changes for head coach Mike Norvell and Florida State's fortunes with its quarterback play and issues competing in the trenches on both sides of the ball, the Noles are essentially out of the Playoff conversation after Week 0.
Here's a look at the updated 12-team College Football Playoff bracket predictions after some surprising results in Week 0.
Rank | Team | Why are they here | Previous rank |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Ohio State | Big Ten Champion | 1 |
2 | Georgia | SEC Champion | 2 |
3 | Utah | Big 12 Champion | 3 |
4 | Miami | ACC Champion | 4 |
5 | Penn State | At-Large | 5 |
6 | Tennessee | At-Large | 6 |
7 | Oregon | At-Large | 7 |
8 | Texas | At-Large | 8 |
9 | Ole Miss | At-Large | 9 |
10 | Notre Dame | At-Large | N/A |
11 | Iowa | At-Large | 11 |
12 | Liberty | At-Large | 12 |
The three teams I have as the last three to be left out of the at-large bids in the 12-team CFP are the Mizzou Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Kansas State Wildcats (in that order).
Since I didn't have Florida State in my initial College Football Playoff projections, there was only one change in my 12 teams in the Playoff bracket prediction. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got a bump due to getting a slightly easier schedule than anticipated later in the season. According to ESPN, Notre Dame now has the 54th toughest strength of schedule in the FBS this regular season.
Notre Dame hosts Florida State at home in South Bend in early November, coming off a string of seven straight unranked matchups from the preseason polls for the Irish in the first half of the season. That matchup against the Noles doesn't look to be as big of a threat of being a loss at home to Notre Dame's resume for the Playoff than it did just a few days ago before Week 0.
The SEC has one fewer team in this Playoff prediction, now boasting four teams in the Playoff including the Georgia Bulldogs, Tennessee Volunteers, Longhorns, and Ole Miss Rebels. The Big Ten is tied with the SEC now with the most projected teams in the 12-team Playoff bracket prediction, including the Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon Ducks, and Iowa Hawkeyes.
