3 big overreactions after Texas's throttling of Michigan
Head coach Steve Sarkisian and No. 3 Texas football handily defeated the defending National Champions and the No. 10 ranked team in the country, the Michigan Wolverines, at the Big House in Week 2 on Saturday.
Texas football rides to victory in Ann Arbor behind three pass TDs from QB Quinn Ewers
Texas controlled the game from beginning to end, coming up with a convincing 31-12 win over Michigan. The double-digit victory over the Wolverines in Ann Arbor ended a bunch of streaks at home for the Wolverines, most notably Michigan's 23-game home winning streak.
A Michigan team that has a lot of NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball was beaten in the trenches, and through the air this weekend against the Longhorns. Texas also controlled the tone in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball too, against a Michigan offense that couldn't effectively convert on third down or even consistently get the ball across the 50 into Texas's territory in this game.
The win over Michigan has moved Texas into the spot of being one of the top national title contenders, along with other blue blood teams like the Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Here are three overreactions following the Longhorns double-digit handling of Michigan in Week 2.
Colin Simmons is Texas's best pass rusher
True freshman edge rusher Colin Simmons had his coming out party for the Longhorns on a huge stage at the Big House in a nationally televised top-10 game against the defending champs.
Simmons registered a whopping game-high six quarterback pressures, one sack, and two defensive stops as he made life difficult for Michigan quarterback Davis Warren trying to get the ball out accurately from the pocket this weekend.
Once he started getting more consistent snaps on defense for Texas against Michigan's offense, Simmons was really the only source of consistent pressure from the front seven for the Longhorns. Simmons notched Texas's only sack of Warren in this game, and he nearly came up with a second one in the second half.
We need to see more results from the Texas pass rushers getting home as a primary area of focus entering the rest of the season for Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns. Despite Michigan's offensive line being pretty big and physical, that is still a group that lost all five starters during the offseason.
