3 emergency transfer RB options for Texas this fall
Isaiah Newell
Former school: Oregon State
Redshirt junior Isaiah Newell was one of a handful of Oregon State Beavers running backs with live-game experience who transferred out of the program this offseason during the spring portal window. Star junior Damien Martinez ended up transferring to the Miami Hurricanes to join head coach Mario Cristobal for the 2024 season.
Oregon State's other running back transfer with multiple years of live-game experience, Newell, appears to still be available in the portal entering this fall and the 2024 regular season. Newell was a top 40 ranked transfer running back this offseason in the 247Sports Composite. I would only assume that would make him the top ranked available transfer running back in the portal this fall.
Newell is best known for his performance in Oregon State's upset win over the in-state rival Oregon Ducks during the 2022 campaign. He scored two big rushing touchdowns for Oregon State, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, to get the Beavs the 38-34 win over the Ducks a couple of years ago.
From the perspectives of physicality and experience at running back, Newell checks many of the boxes Texas would hypothetically need from an emergency running back transfer this fall. At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, he is a big back who can run downhill between the tackles and he isn't afraid of contact.
Newell also brings that important ability to put down his shoulder pads and fight for those difficult extra yards after contact in short-yardage situations around the chains and on the goal line.
