3 freshmen who have impressed for Texas in the first 3 weeks

Texas has seen freshmen rise up into big roles on both sides of the ball early this season during the non-conference portion of the slate this fall.

In two of the regular season's first three games, No. 1 Texas football has gotten over 70 players live-game reps during non-conference play. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian have done a great job getting younger players deeper down the depth chart on both sides of the ball valuable early live-game reps so early in the regular season.

Texas football has highlighted multiple early contributors among freshmen early this season

While none of the starters for the Longhorns on either side of the ball are true freshmen, plenty of contributors on the two-deep among the first and second-year players have looked the part early this season.

A big part of why the Longhorns are ranked the No. 1 team in the nation in this week's AP Poll is the talent and depth Sarkisian and his staff have built and developed on this two-deep over the past few years. Texas not only looks like an SEC-level talented roster this fall, but it also looks like one of the teams primed to contend for a national title.

But that seems obvious since the Longhorns already handily defeated the defending National Champion Michigan Wolverines a couple of weeks ago on the road and are now ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll.

Here are three freshmen who impressed for the Longhorns in the season's first three games.

Ryan Wingo, WR

After three weeks, Ryan Wingo is the highest-graded true freshman wide receiver in the FBS (per PFF). While his targets have been limited mostly to later in games early this season, Wingo has made the most of the touches and snaps he has taken on offense.

Wingo has hauled in all seven of his targets in the receiving game for nearly 200 receiving yards and one touchdown. His longest touchdown catch of the season came on a beautiful connection on a deep ball from redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning in the 56-7 win over the UTSA Roadrunners at DKR last weekend.

Wingo has been the definition of a reliable playmaker when the Longhorns find different ways to get the ball in his hands in the season's first three games. He's already generated four explosive plays this season, including a long 55-yard run on a sweep motion in the win over Michigan two weeks ago.

With Texas having multiple more winnable games on the schedule before the end of September, I fully expect Wingo to be involved in the offense with at least a handful of targets per game to round out a stellar start to the first month of his collegiate career.
