RBs held to limited contact for precautionary reasons

OTF's CJ Vogel reported after the second fall scrimmage on Aug. 17 that multiple Texas running backs were in the green non-contact jerseys today. It sounds like junior running back Jaydon Blue and sophomore Tre Wisner were the two Texas rushers who were held to limited contact in the scrimmage today for the first and second-team offenses.

It's not unusual for a coaching staff to limit the contact and physicality that the skill guys at places like running back take in team drills and fall scrimmages, with the start of the regular season just a few weeks away. Especially when you add in the bad luck the Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian and Tashard Choice have had with running back injuries in the last couple of weeks of fall practice.

With Texas down to just three scholarship running backs around the halfway mark of preseason camp, more significant practice and scrimmage reps have gone to players like true freshman Jerrick Gibson, walk-on Colin Page, and even senior tight end Juan Davis at H-back.

The positives for Texas at the running back position after the second and final scrimmage of fall camp today concerns the bigger plays generated by Gibson and Page. After Gibson fumbled on a goal line carry in the first fall scrimmage last weekend, he showed much better ball security while running between the tackles in today's scrimmage.

From what's been reported in the last hour or so with various scrimmage and practice notes today, we've haven't heard or seen anything about ball security issues or other running back injuries. That should be considered a success to some degree for the Longhorns on the offensive side of the ball and in the backfield a few weeks into preseason camp and coming out of the second fall scrimmage.
