3 key injured players for Texas heading into the bye week
Quinn Ewers, QB
The biggest injury question for the Longhorns coming out of the bye week against OU will be the health and status of redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers. The third-year starting quarterback for Texas missed the SEC opener against Mississippi State last weekend, with reports saying that he was at "70 percent".
It sounds like Ewers could've started for the Longhorns in the SEC opener last week, but the decision was to get him healthier with a more long-term outlook entering the rest of the season.
In practice during the bye week, various reports have mentioned that Ewers is coming along well while taking more first-team reps on offense.
Sarkisian said in a press conference earlier this week that he will continue to monitor Ewers' status throughout this week and next to make sure he's ready to go and checks all the boxes necessary for him to play and get the start against OU.
"Throughout the week, I’m really trying to assess the things that I think he’s most comfortable with. Various injuries along the way, different types of injury. What does it look like he’s most comfortable with? If he’s going to play, I’ve already listed out 10, 15, 20 things I think he feels really good about."
- Steve Sarkisian on Quinn Ewers
Ewers has missed the last two starts due to an abdominal strain injury he suffered in the first half of Texas's win in Week 3 against UTSA. Redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning got the last two starts in a row for the Longhorns, leading Texas to two straight wins over the UL-Monroe Warhawks in Week 4 and Mississippi State for the program's first-ever SEC victory.
Assuming Ewers does start for the Longhorns coming out of the bye week for Red River vs. Oklahoma, it would be the second time he's come back from an injury to start against the Sooners in his collegiate career. He was tremendous against the Sooners when he returned from injury two years ago in Red River for a Texas victory, 49-0.
