Earlier this week, Texas football reached the midway point of spring camp. Only 15 days remain until the spring game at DKR on April 20.

Quinn Ewers is a solidified Heisman favorite

For the first time in the last few years at Texas under Sarkisian, the Longhorns have a solidified top two on the quarterback depth chart. In each of the last two spring camps, Texas had either a competition going for the starting quarterback job or the backup.

Redshirt junior Quinn Ewers returns for his third year as Texas's starting quarterback. Getting a third-year starter back that led the Longhorns to a Big 12 Championship and the College Football Playoff last year is a big-time luxury for Sarkisian.

Backing up Ewers this year is true freshman quarterback Arch Manning. Last year, Arch battled then redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy for the backup job behind Ewers on the QB depth chart.

After Murphy transferred to Duke earlier this offseason, the backup job is Manning's for the taking.

Various practice reports and media discussion have noted multiple times over the strides and maturity that Manning has displayed this spring. He has the makings of a quarterback that will be ready at any point to take the reigns in live-game action entering this season as the backup.

I think the biggest storyline in the quarterback room this spring for the Longhorns is the command Ewers has of the offense and of his own game. Ewers is reportedly getting the ball out much quicker and more decisively to his receivers in team drills this spring than he ever did consistently in the last two years in spring or fall practice.

Not only does Texas have one of the best returning starters at quarterback in the SEC in 2024, but they also have a leader who could rank among the best players at his position in the Power Five this year.
