3 possible Texas position changes to watch in spring ball
Jahdae Barron
Possible position change: Star to CB
Texas's secondary will be one of the deepest and most talented position groups at any level of the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns this year. Texas goes at least two-deep with talented players at each spot in the defensive backfield entering spring ball.
Potentially the deepest and most proven position group in the secondary for the Longhorns entering spring ball is nickel. The return of senior defensive back Jahdae Barron gives Texas possibly their best player in the secondary back for one more season in 2024.
Behind Barron on the depth chart will be rising juniors Jaylon Guilbeau and Austin Jordan duking it out for a spot on the two-deep in spring practice. Guilbeau and Jordan have both contributed at various positions in the secondary for Texas in the last two seasons and bring valuable experience to a key position in Pete Kwiatkowski's defense entering the SEC this coming fall.
Texas infamously recruits versatile defensive backs who can be cross-trained at mulitple positions in the secondary. Not only is Barron potentially Texas's best defensive back, he is also their best one-on-one cover guy.
Barron has shown in the last few seasons that he can hang with just about any wideout he's matched up against one-on-one in coverage.
The embarrassment of riches Texas has among talented and proven defensive backs has allowed the coaching staff to cross-train Barron early this offseason at multiple positions in the secondary. He's taken reps at field safety and corner, along with his traditional position at star.
Stud sophomore corner Malik Muhammad has locked down the starting spot at boundary CB. Barron could easily battle rising junior corner Terrance Brooks for the starting reps at field corner to give Texas it's best group of defensive backs possible entering the upcoming season.
It also helps make this move easier if Texas does proceed with primarily getting Barron reps at field corner this spring that Guilbeau has looked like the best version of himself physically since his true freshman campaign early this offseason.
