3 recent Texas decommits who became stars

Texas had some unfortunate decommitments from the late 2010s and early 2020s recruiting cycles under the past couple of coaching regimes.

The cycle of quarterback recruiting for the Longhorns in the 2020 calendar year was one of the most turbulent and forgettable of any class in the recent history of the program. Texas lost commitments in the 2021 class from both four-star from Katy Tompkins (TX) Jalen Milroe, and Ewers.

The events that led to Texas losing Milroe's commitment was directly connected to Ewers. When Ewers originally committed to the Longhorns during the 2020 offseason, he was in the class of 2022. A few months after he originally committed to Texas, Ewers reclassified down to 2021 and wound up signign with Ohio State.

What you can't forget is that when Ewers committed to Texas late in the summer of 2020, that likely cost the Longhorns Milroe in the class of 2021. Milroe did say in an interview during this spring that Texas "dropped the ball" during his recruitment after they landed Ewers' commitment in the next class up from his.

But it's hard to overlook the pure fact that Milroe was supposed to be Herman's quarterback of the future in the early 2020s. And when Ewers committed to his favorite childhood school in the class of 2022, that clearly put some strain on Milroe's future outlook as the long-term starting quarterback at Texas.

Very soon after Ewers committed to the Longhorns in the 2020 offseason, Milroe flipped from Texas to Alabama. Milroe waited a couple of years at Alabama behind Bryce Young before he got his shot to start for the Tide offense last fall.

While Milroe stuck it out at Alabama, Ewers came back to the school he originally committed to at Texas via the transfer portal during the 2022 offseason. Ewers started at Texas for the last two seasons after spending one year at Ohio State.

The ironic part of all this saga between Milroe, Ewers, and the Longhorns is that the situation came full circle last season when the two teams met on the gridiron in Week 2. Ewers and Milroe squared off as the starting quarterbacks of their respective teams in a huge showdown at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Ewers bested Milroe in a classic contest that vaulted the Longhorns to Playoff contender status after handing Saban his only double-digit loss on his home turf in non-conference play last season.

Milroe also went on to have a huge year as Alabama's starting quarterback, despite some questions concerning his ability to lead their offense early in non-conference play. He led Alabama to an SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff, while amassing over 4,000 total yards and 35 touchdowns.

Entering the 2024 campaign, Milroe is regarded as a Heisman contender and one of the best returning starting quarterbacks in college football. The question for Milroe during the 2024 campaign is whether he can adapt to the new air raid system under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, who took over at Alabama after Saban retired early this offseason.
