3 standouts from Texas's second fall scrimmage on Saturday
Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian participated in a fall camp scrimmage for the second Saturday in a row this weekend. Texas's second and final scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 17 wasn't as physical or intense as the first fall scrimmage last weekend, largely due to precautionary reasons due to injuries suffered in the last couple of weeks of practice in team drills.
Second fall scrimmage stays injury-free for Texas football this weekend
The entire scrimmage was not full contact as it usually is for the Longhorns in fall camp. Texas did go live tackling for the first half of the scrimmage on Saturday. The second half of the scrimmage has been described as more of a "thump" contact level to help minimize the risk of injuries since we're so close to the regular season opener in a couple of weeks against Colorado State.
A few good examples of the Longhorns keeping key guys healthy in the second fall scrimmage this weekend was Sarkisian and staff holding out senior center Jake Majors due to a lower-body injury and keeping players like Anthony Hill Jr. and Malik Muhammad on pitch counts on defense.
Here are three standouts from Texas's second and last scrimmage of fall camp this weekend.
Jelani McDonald, S
It sounds like the secondary was one of the most impressive position groups on either side of the ball for the Longhorns in the second fall scrimmage yesterday. The defensive backs with the first and second-team defenses were not only making it difficult for the quarterbacks to throw into tight windows and for receivers to get any sort of separation while running their routes, but many individuals guys in the secondary also stood out for their ability in one-on-one coverage.
One defensive back who was specifically spotlighted as having a really big day in pass coverage for the Longhorns in yesterday's scrimmage was sophomore safety Jelani McDonald. Inside Texas's Eric Nahlin reported on Aug. 18 that McDonald was one of the first standouts mentioned from the scrimmage.
McDonald reportedly had a fantastic scrimmage in one-on-one coverage, with him being described as looking more like a cornerback back there in the secondary than a safety.
I don't think many defensive backs for the Longhorns have had a more impressive showing in the last two fall scrimmage in the past couple of weekends than McDonald has with his proficiency and disruptiveness in pass coverage. It wasn't just this weekend where we heard about McDonald being a disruptor and a ball hawk in the secondary.
Last weekend, McDonald came up with an interception on a throw by redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning in the first scrimmage of fall camp.
