3 standouts from Texas's second fall scrimmage on Saturday
Quinn Ewers, QB
It's fantastic to hear the level of competition was so high between the quarterbacks on offense and the secondary against the Texas receivers on defense in the scrimmage yesterday. Redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers was really put to the test, and it sounds like he passed with flying colors considering how tight the coverage was and that the defensive front was getting decent pressure on the pocket from guys like Vernon Broughton and Colin Simmons getting an effective pass rush.
Ewers reportedly didn't have any turnovers in the scrimmage yesterday. He was getting the ball out on time and was fitting some really nice throws into tight windows to targets in the receiving corps on intermediate routes and even some deep balls.
The accuracy and comfort hanging back in the pocket and getting off his throws on time were reportedly looking improved for Ewers in the second fall scrimmage yesterday compared to the first scrimmage last week. Ewers was reportedly "more pinpoint" with his throws in the scrimmage yesterday.
Ewers set the tone for the first-team offense from the first series he led in the scrimmage. He reportedly led the first-team offense to score a touchdown on their first drive of the scrimmage.
We also heard that it was a positive day in the scrimmage yesterday for Arch and true freshman quarterback Trey Owens. Owens didn't have any turnovers. And while Arch did have one interception, it sounds like it wasn't necessarily his fault since the ball went off his receivers' hands and into the arms of a defensive back.
