3 standouts from Texas's second spring scrimmage today
Texas football had its second scrimmage of spring ball on April 13. It is also the last spring scrimmage for Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian before the annual Orange-White spring football game at DKR on April 20.
Texas football has another intense spring scrimmage this weekend
This last scrimmage before the spring game next weekend gave Longhorns players the opportunity to show out in simulated live-game action to push for any last-minute depth chart movement. Since Texas only has a few spring practices remaining before the spring game one week from today, there aren't many chances left for players to prove themselves in front of the coaching staff before camp's conclusion.
Last weekend, we heard that the two sides of the ball for the Longhorns were pretty evenly matched in the first scrimmage of spring ball. Texas had an intense and physical scrimmage in front of many touted blue-chip recruits on April 6, including 11-on-11 and red zone work.
Multiple scrimmage reports this afternoon note that today's action was as physical as the 11-on-11 and red zone work last weekend.
Here are three standouts for the Longhorns from the second scrimmage of spring ball on April 13.
Colin Simmons, EDGE
This spot on the list among the standouts from the second spring scrimmage could go to either one of redshirt junior edge rusher Trey Moore or true freshman Colin Simmons. Moore and Simmons were apparently very disruptive working off the edge with the second-team defense in today's scrimmage.
It sounds like Simmons and Moore were getting relentless pressure on the second-team offense, led by redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning. Simmons forced some bad passes from Arch, which is something we'll touch on a bit later in this article.
Simmons specifically reportedly "earned plaudits" for how quick and athletic he looked during the scrimmage today. This is the second straight weekend that Simmons has been praised for a strong showing in a scrimmage after he registered multiple sacks in the first scrimmage of spring ball on April 6.
