3 takeaways from Day 1 of Texas's fall practice
Ryan Wingo and Silas Bolden impress
The wide receiver position was one of the more heavily-discussed of any group on either side of the football entering the first day of camp today. Flood had mentioned during the coordinator press conferences on July 30 that Texas had nine receivers that they could rotate in during live drills in practice over the next few weeks.
The first team wide receiver group in practice today in individual and one-on-one receiver drills was Johntay Cook II, DeAndre Moore Jr., and Isaiah Bond. Here's how the second and third teams looked at wideout in practice today.
Second-team: Ryan Wingo, Matthew Golden, Silas Bolden
Third-team: Aaron Butler, Ryan Niblett, Parker Livingstone
While all wideouts were pretty good from what we heard and saw during the media viewing window in practice today, the second-team was particularly good running routes and making contested catches.
Bolden had a huge day for himself in his first day in practice as a Longhorn for training camp. He was blowing past opposing DBs, especially when he was matched up against the second and third-team secondary players.
It's noteworthy that while Bolden was extremely quick and made some impressive catches in one-on-one receiver drills, he is probably the lightest skill player for the Longhorns this season.
Another second-team wideout who was out there cooking opposing defensive backs in one-on-one receiver drills was Wingo. The true freshman sensation reportedly burned freshman cornerback Kobe Black on multiple intermediate and deep routes where he caught the ball.
It sounds like it will be extremely difficult for Sarkisian and Chris Jackson to keep Wingo and Bolden out of the core part of the wide receiver rotation this season.
