3 takeaways from Day 2 of Texas spring practice
Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson challenging for early reps out of the backfield
Speaking of the standouts among the true freshman early enrollees for the Longhorns, the running backs have looked great early this offseason.
Texas and running backs coach Tashard Choice added two talented blue-chip running back recruits in the 2024 signing class. Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson have both looked the part physically and with their running style in position-specific and team drills early in spring ball.
You can tell with how Clark and Gibson are looking physically and running the ball that they got down to work and made progress immediately during winter workouts. Clark is up to 6-foot and 210-pounds, and it shows with his lower-body strength in running back drills.
Gibson is also a tank for the Longhorns at running back, at 5-foot-10 and 220-pounds.
Orangebloods reported (subscriber content) that Gibson and Clark "have made an immediate impression" early this spring.
Clark is reportedly more of the explosive one-cut back who can impact the Longhorns on the ground and in the receiving game. Gibson, meanwhile, is the more powerful of the two backs that can break tackles running between the tackles.
There's a good chance that Clark and Gibson will work their way into the running back rotation if they continue to perform at the level they have early in offseason workouts and in the first week of spring ball. While they probably won't push junior Jaydon Blue and/or sophomore CJ Baxter Jr. for starting reps out of the backfield this year, they've still made tremendous progress already this offseason.
