Texas's EDGE newcomers ready to make an immediate impact

We can't say it enough late this summer that Texas's EDGE group is the best it's been by a wide margin under Pete Kwiatkowski in his four years as the co-DC and defensive play caller. Texas has probably five or six guys in the EDGE room this year who are ready to assume live-game reps along the defensive front this fall.

The first week of fall practice for the Longhorns has really highlighted how much depth and proficiency Texas has at edge rusher entering this upcoming season in the SEC. Newcomers to the EDGE room this offseason, specifically redshirt junior UTSA transfer Trey Moore and true freshman Colin Simmons, have really shined in the last few fall practices this week.

Inside Texas reported on Aug. 4 that Moore has ascended into a leadership role as a starter along Texas's front seven early in preseason camp. Moore has been excellent for the Longhorns in individual and pass-rush drills in the first week of fall practice.

It sounds like Moore has given Texas's offensive tackles and tight end blockers fits in team drills in the last two practices this weekend.

Simmons has also been a standout for the Longhorns in the first four practices of preseason camp. He's reportedly challenging the likes of junior Justice Finkley and sophomore Colton Vasek for the second-team reps at EDGE.

It's clear that it will be extremely difficult for PK and Johnny Nansen to keep Simmons out of the EDGE rotation this fall. Moore and Simmons are great examples of how the EDGE position has come leaps and bounds for the Longhorns in the last few years. They are ready to be gamers for the Longhorns in the SEC for Texas's stout defensive front.
