3 Texas football early enrollees standing out in winter S&C

Texas football and S&C coach Torre Becton kicked off the winter strength and conditioning program for the 2024 offseason in mid-January. In the early phases of winter S&C, new enrollees are being tested to see who can step up before camp begins this spring.

Xavier Filsaime, S

Texas's highest-rated defensive back signee in the 2024 class, five-star McKinney safety Xavier Filsaime, is another early enrollee with all the tools to be an immediate impact player as a true freshman. He is a physical and rangy safety with the athleticism and build you'd expect from an SEC-caliber DB.

It was big for the Longhorns to get Filsaime to campus this spring as an early enrollee. He is expected to compete for early reps on the two-deep at the safety position, especially with all that Texas lost among the starters from last year's team.

Texas losing three senior safeties with starting experience in the last couple of seasons to the transfer portal this offseason opened the door for the younger defensive backs to push for early reps on the first and second teams this spring.

The biggest questions for Filsaime entering the spring are whether he can learn the concepts for the Texas defense early this offseason and get his body right in the weight room in winter S&C.

And the early feedback on Filsaime in the first couple of weeks of winter workouts is resoundingly positive. He reportedly has "picked things up quickly" on defense and has "hit the ground running" in winter S&C.

No one has a better shot at pushing for significant early reps in the secondary among true freshmen defensive backs than Filsaime. If he continues to show signs of maturity as he develops in the weight room and on the practice field, Filsaime will be in a spot to start solidifying a big role in the safety room this spring.
