3 Texas players losing position battles halfway through camp

A dozen days before the regular season begins on the 40, Texas has some late position battles to be decided in fall practice.

It feels like an overplayed talking point in this fall camp for the Longhorns that this deep and talented receiving corps is still looking to find more cohesion and chemistry in team drills and the last two scrimmages with the top quarterbacks on the first and second-team offenses.

While we've heard many positives from the showings from all three on-scholarship quarterbacks for the Longhorns in the last few weeks of fall practice, there are still some improvements to be had with the chemistry between Quinn Ewers and all the new transfer receivers on campus this fall.

Juniors Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond and senior Silas Bolden have all flashed for the receiving corps for Texas through the first half of preseason camp. Bolden has probably been the best of this group regarding his impact and highlights on offense and special teams with the return units in the last three weeks of fall practice and the two scrimmages.

Bond has also established himself as someone that is just too good for Sarkisian and the Longhorns to keep him off the field in live-game action on offense this season.

Golden had a good showing in the scrimmage last weekend. He made some nice catches and looked better in his connection in the passing game with Ewers and Arch Manning than he did in the first scrimmage of fall camp a couple of weekends ago.

That said, Golden has mostly been taking second-team practice reps at wideout since the start of fall practice three weeks ago roughly. The second-team wideouts in fall practice has mostly been a unit that includes Bolden, Golden, and true freshman sensation Ryan Wingo.

I do think, at least among the upperclassmen in the receiving corps, Golden has the most to prove in the last couple of weeks of fall practice regarding his improving connection with Ewers in team drills and the live-game walkthrough this coming weekend.
