3 Texas WRs turning heads in first week of fall camp
Texas football has gone through three complete days of fall practice to open up preseason camp this week. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian held three straight days of fall practice in helmets and shorts, starting on July 31.
Wide receivers getting the spotlight for Texas football in Week 1 of preseason camp
Sarkisian and the Longhorns practiced at the traditional afternoon time slot at the Frank Denius Fields on July 1 and Aug. 1. Texas held an indoor practice for Day 3 of drills in preseason camp on Friday.
Texas will have a more condensed practice when it hits the practice field for drills on Day 4 of preseason camp on Aug. 3.
The first two days of fall practice this week for the Longhorns had open media viewing windows. The first day for the media viewing window was much longer than the second.
One of the most discussed position groups through the first few days of fall practice has been the receiving corps. Sarkisian and Chris Jackson have a very deep and talented group of eight or nine wideouts who are all competing for first-team practice reps this fall.
Here are three Texas wideouts who turned heads in the first week of fall practice.
Ryan Wingo
True freshman Ryan Wingo burst onto the scene as a very impressive early enrollee for the Longhorns during spring ball. Wingo looked the part of an immediate impact true freshman from the day he stepped on campus back during the winter months for the start of offseason workouts this year.
We mentioned a report in a piece on the site yesterday that none of the Texas defensive backs have been able to cover Wingo in one-on-one receiver drills in practice this week.
Wingo's combination of speed, size, and ball tracking has allowed him to become one of the most formidable pass-catchers in Texas's wideout rotation among the top six guys early in fall practice. He's been taking second-team reps consistently in the first three fall practices this week. He's the only true freshman who has received second-team reps this often since spring ball.
