3 true freshmen to watch in Texas's spring game
Ryan Wingo, WR
Easily the most talked about true freshman early enrollee for the Longhorns this spring on the offensive side of the ball is wide receiver Ryan Wingo.
Sarkisian and the Texas coaches, along with his teammates on offense, have consistently praised Wingo throughout spring ball. Texas's head coach was impressed with the early signs of promise Wingo showed in the first couple of weeks of spring practice.
"I would say the one guy that has probably shown up the most in my eyes would be Ryan Wingo. I feel like the last week, he’s really started to make some plays and you’re really starting to see the size, speed, and athleticism."
Junior quarterback Quinn Ewers also talked about the potential he was seeing in Wingo, among the other young Texas wideouts on campus this spring, in media availability late last month.
"It’s just a matter of getting down Coach Sark’s offense. It’s still early and those guys are still young, but they’re really starting to grasp it."
Wingo has consistently impressed those in and around the program this spring with his ability to get separation and catch pretty much everything thrown his way. He's held his own while taking first and second-team wide receiver reps since the second week of spring ball.
I'd expect to see Wingo with the first or second-team offense in this weekend's spring game. He could get matched up against some of Texas's better defensive backs one-on-one on the outside, which will be interesting to watch to see who gets the best of who.
If any of the four early enrollee wideouts for the Longhorns this spring had to be the pick to crack Sarkisian's rotation of four or five top receivers for the upcoming season, it would be Wingo.
