3 younger Texas players who could get more playing time in SEC play
Ryan Wingo, WR
The most impressive true freshman on the offensive side of the ball for the Longhorns after the first three weeks is standout wide receiver Ryan Wingo. After his first three career games this fall, Wingo leads all freshmen wideouts in the P4 in receiving grade and yards per touch.
He's reeled in seven catches for 197 receiving yards and one touchdown catch, along with one rushing play for 55 yards.
Wingo has been one of Texas's most explosive playmakers at the skill positions early this season. He leads the team in yards per catch (28.1) and already has five explosive plays under his belt.
In Texas's win over UTSA last weekend, Wingo was explosive pretty much every time he touched the ball, taking three catches for 127 receiving yards and one touchdown (including a highlight-reel 75-yard catch for a score from Manning).
Wingo could easily be on pace to break many true freshman receiving records for the Longhorns if he continues to be this explosive of a playmaker entering SEC play in the next few weeks.
Wingo's reliability and contested catch abilities have also been a big part of why he's been so threatening to opposing defenses when he touches the ball this season. He's caught all seven of the targets that have gone his way this season, including going 2-for-2 on contested balls on the outside.
One part of Wingo's game that shouldn't be overlooked from his performances early this season is his outside blocking. Wingo is Texas's highest-graded run blocker in the receiving corps.
Combine Wingo's explosiveness and his blocking proficiency with his reliable route running and strong hands, and you get a wideout who is primed to make a huge impact for this offense for the rest of the season. With the chemistry Wingo and Manning showed in camp and on the field last weekend in the offense's big showing with 56 points up on the board against UTSA, I think the standout freshman could be in for another 100-yard performance against ULM.
