4 big overreactions after Texas's crushing win vs. ULM

Texas continues to see guys step up and play at all-conference (and even some at All-American type levels) on both sides of the ball in the non-conference finale 48-point win over ULM this weekend.

Texas has the best secondary in the SEC

Texas's defensive backfield has answered the bell and a little bit more when it comes to completely turning a corner after struggling at times last season in conference play defending the pass and some opposing spread offensive concepts. The Longhorns are not only effectively matching up one-on-one in man coverage to an extremely proficient degree, but they are also making plays on the football to help create crucial turnovers on defense.

After four games this season, the Longhorns rank eighth nationally in passing defense (allowing 116 pass yards per game). Texas also ranks sixth in the nation in interceptions (averaging 1.8 picks per game).

The secondary played a huge role again in holding an opponent out of the end zone for the second time in four games this season during non-conference play. ULM was held under 60 pass yards in this game for the first time in nearly a decade (since 2016).

Texas's corners were nearly perfect in their coverage production in this game against ULM. In fact, every single Texas defensive back allowed fewer than five receiving yards in coverage in this game, which is the first time an SEC secondary has accomplished that feat in pass defense against an FBS foe for this season so far.

Sophomore corner Malik Muhammad was targeted three times in this game, and didn't give up a single reception, including one pass breakup. Defensive backs Gavin Holmes and Jaylon Guilbeau were also targeted multiple times in pass coverage by ULM, and didn't allow a single catch to be made in their stifling efforts back in the secondary for the Longhorns.

When ULM was able to complete a pass to their skill guys closer to the line of scrimmage, they weren't able to find any room to run after the catch. Starting DBs Jahdae Barron and Michael Taaffe made sure that ULM wasn't going to get any big gains after the catch, leading the way with a combined four defensive stops on pass defense plays.
