Jerrick Gibson will lead Texas in rushing touchdowns

Texas's leading rusher in the win over Colorado State in Week 1 was true freshman running back Jerrick Gibson. The former four-star running back recruit from IMG Academy in Florida rushed for 67 yards and one touchdown.

Gibson's one rushing score came on a huge effort where he kept his legs churning and got some help from his blockers to push him into the end zone to put Texas up by over five scores in the second half.

It's noteworthy that Gibson didn't only lead Texas in total rushing yards on Saturday, but he also tied for the lead in rushing touchdowns, red zone rushing attempts, and yards per carry. He showed that he is ready to make an impact in more ways than one as a really key contributor to this backfield entering the Michigan game next weekend and then SEC play later this month.

Alongside Gibson, sophomore running back Tre Wisner and junior Jaydon Blue also had efficient outings for the Longhorns' backfield against Colorado State. Wisner and Blue combined for nearly 150 total yards from scrimmage and one touchdown as they mostly split the workload carries out of the backfield in the first half for the offense.

The fact that the Texas coaching staff is already showing this much trust in Gibson to get him these vital red zone carries in practice and in live-game situations on offense is huge. Gibson fits what Texas needs with these important goal line carries regarding his ability to hit the hole in zone blocking schemes and fit through contact for these tough extra yards to pick up key first downs and touchdowns in the red areas.

It was also pretty surprising to see Wisner lead the way for the goal line carries in the first-half red zone touches for the offense.
