Sydir Mitchell will get first-team reps at nose tackle late in fall camp

There's really no sugar coating this; sophomore defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell has not shown the progress and development in offseason workouts and on the practice field as we had expected and hoped since the start of spring ball.

Mitchell has the physical tools and frame necessary to be an overpowering force and a really effective two-gapper at nose tackle for the Longhorns' along the defensive line. But his conditioning hasn't been where it needs to be entering his second year in college this fall for the Longhorns.

In the last couple of weeks of fall practice, Mitchell has battled for the third-team reps along the interior defensive line in individual and team drills. He's been working in behind true freshman Alex January and junior Aaron Bryant regarding the practice reps along the defensive line at nose tackle in team drills and scrimmage settings since camp got underway in late July.

Regarding any potential progress he's made in team drills and the first fall scrimmage this weekend, it sounds like Mitchell showed some bright spots while rotating in with the first and second-team defense in the live scrimmage yesterday. Inside Texas reported on Aug. 10 (paid content) that Mitchell is looking like he's in better shape as of the second week of preseason camp compared to where he was at physically and with his conditioning in team drills during spring ball earlier this offseason.

I still think there is a lot Mitchell has to prove with his conditioning and consistent effort in fall practice in the next few weeks to make his way up the depth chart for the interior defensive linemen for Kenny Baker for the upcoming season in the SEC. But it is a major positive if Mitchell has improved his conditioning and shows that continued development through the remainder of fall practice.
