4 standouts from Texas's first fall scrimmage today
Anthony Hill Jr., LB
All signs are pointing to sophomore linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. becoming a star for the Longhorns defense this fall with how his game has been trending since he started as a true freshman last year. Hill is off to a tremendous start to preseason camp, naturally transitioning himself from playing as a hybrid linebacker/edge rusher and outside backer last fall to the mike spot commanding the defense this fall camp.
Hill reportedly was "all over the place" for the Longhorns, making plays in space and in run defense and the pass rush against the first and second-team offenses in the scrimmage today. It sounds like Hill had a few really big hits over the middle of the field, setting the tone for the defense and any skill players who wanted to try to run into the box between the numbers.
One specific hit that Hill had early in this scrimmage that set the tone for the scrimmage was on a run stop against Gibson on a play in run defense. Hill reportedly laid the lumber on Gibson, which isn't an easy thing to do given that the true freshman running back is such a physical runner and sits above 200 pounds.
We also heard about a nice sack and a couple more quarterback pressures that Hill had when rushing the passer in the scrimmage. OTF's Gerry Hamilton even said that Hill was the "MVP" of the scrimmage for the Longhorns today among all the players on either side of the ball.
PK and Nansen reportedly were experimenting with some different pressure looks from the EDGEs and linebackers in the scrimmage, including a package with Hill, redshirt junior Trey Moore, junior Ethan Burke, and true freshman Colin Simmons.
