Texas football's top running back priority in the 2025 class this spring, Shreveport (LA) Calvary Baptist four-star James Simon, is ready to decide in a few weeks. Simon announced on his X account on May 13 that he will commit in a live decision from the On3 Elite Series on May 29 at 12:30 p.m. CT.
4-Star Texas football RB priority James Simon sets a late-May decision date
The On3 Elite Series is set to take place in Nashville, TN, in late May.
Along with the announcement of his decision date, Simon also dropped his five finalist schools he'll decide between on May 29. Texas is included with the LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish among Simon's top five schools.
Simon has emerged as the top running back priority in the 2025 class this spring for RB coach Tashard Choice and the Longhorns. Choice has done a nice job building the relationship with Simon and showing him that he is a priority for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail.
He told Inside Texas last week (paid content) that his relationship and communication with Choice are fantastic.
"His track record is great and it speaks on his development. My relationship with him is great, we talk all of the time. He’s definitely a coach I could play for."
Simon recently visited Texas unofficially for the spring game at DKR on April 20. Choice and head coach Steve Sarkisian pitched Simon as being a future bell-cow running back in Texas's offense. Following the conclusion of the late-April visit a few weeks ago, Simon said he felt he would be a "great addition" to the Longhorns' future running back room.
The 5-foot-11 and 200-pound back ranks as the No. 200 prospect nationally in the 2025 class in the 247Sports Composite, No. 15 running back, and No. 4 from Louisiana.
Choice and the Longhorns currently have one running back committed in the 2025 class: Tyler (TX) Chapel Hill four-star Rickey Stewart Jr. A hypothetical commitment from Simon would complete the Longhorns' running back class for 2025 before summer visits begin in June.
