4 takeaways from Texas's full pads practice on Tuesday
Jaylon Guilbeau emerging as a leader in Texas's secondary
One of the biggest developments in the second day of fall practice for the Longhorns this week was junior defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau breaking down the team before drills began this afternoon.
Since it is usually one of the established leaders that the coaching staff lets break down the team before practice gets into the individual and/or team drills, this is a big sign of Guilbeau's progress in fall camp. A few of the other Longhorns players who have broken down the team in fall practice in the last week or so are sophomore linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. and redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers.
We've noted multiple times in the last week or so how Guilbeau has emerged as one of the breakout defensive backs who has earned his first-team reps in fall practice. Guilbeau is definitely earning his starting spot in the secondary this fall.
At this point of preseason camp, it appears that the coaching staff is doing everything they can to find a way to get Guilbeau on the field for the defense this upcoming season.
Texas legitimately has two all-conference caliber starters among their upperclassmen at the star position this fall. Guilbeau and Jahdae Barron can both be utilized at multiple positions. And both defensive backs are guaranteed to get plenty of defensive snaps, regardless of whether they're playing at the star position or at safety/corner, this season in the SEC.
