CJ Baxter Jr. suffers an injury in practice

Per On Texas Football's CJ Vogel, sophomore running back CJ Baxter Jr. left practice today with a knee injury. Baxter reportedly is being checked out further with an MRI on Tuesday evening to see if there is any severe injuries to his knee.

This is unfortunate news for Baxter and the Longhorns, as the sophomore running back was off to a solid start to preseason camp in the last week. Baxter and junior Jaydon Blue have been competing for the first-team reps at running back for Texas in practice entering the 2024 season.

Baxter was Texas's second leading rusher as a true freshman last fall, rushing for 659 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and five touchdowns. He also hauled in 24 catches for 156 receiving yards last season. Baxter's role in the Texas backfield expanded late last season after junior running back Jonathon Brooks suffered a season-ending knee injury against TCU.

Texas had otherwise made it through the first week of preseason camp without any major injuries, outside of a couple of minor bumps and bruises along the way. We will continue to follow Baxter's injury status for updates after he gets the MRI for further evaluation today.
