Texas's defensive front definitely had its fair share of issues in the first half of this game against Mississippi State. The Longhorns allowed Mississippi State to rush for over 110 yards in the first half. But the Texas defensive front tightend up in the second half.
Senior defensive tackle Vernon Broughton really turned things up in the second half for the Longhorns. Broughton came up with multiple defensive stops, a couple of quarterback pressures, one sack, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble in the win over Mississippi State.
Broughton's highlighting play of the second half against Mississippi State was a strip-sack fumble recovery of Bulldogs' freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren. Broughton also blew up multiple plays in the Mississippi State backfield, showing his leverage and two-gapping ability when it mattered in the second half.
On the edge, Texas also got a big performance from freshman edge rusher Colin Simmons. In the second half, Simmons really turned up his game, registering multiple defensive stops and a huge sack on a third down to give Texas the ball back on a big drive.
Simmons registered multiple tackles for loss and one sack in this game to continue his huge start to his true freshman campaign.
