It is always a big topic to discuss about which true freshmen can make an impact for Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian entering the college football season. Sarkisian and Texas signed an impressive 2024 recruiting class that ranked in the top five nationally this past cycle, which included a record-breaking 18 enrollees from the high school recruits.

NCAA has changed the redshirt rules in a way this year that could get some valuable Texas football live-game reps to underclassmen

The other part of this discussion for roster management for Sarkisian and the Longhorns is that they know which players need more development and time with quality practice reps before they're ready to consistently make an impact in live-game action on the field. Texas has a handful of true freshmen who are ready to make an immediate impact this fall, especially among the five-star recruits from the 2024 class.

But most of the Longhorns players on the roster for this season among the true freshmen will be candidates to be redshirted to get more time to develop and learn on the depth chart this fall. Under NCAA rules, Texas players can still play in four games or fewer before burning their redshirt this season.

It's also a noteworthy change that postseason and conference championship games don't count toward the four-game redshirt rule for players in the NCAA.

Texas is expected to contend for the SEC title and in the conversation for the 12-team College Football Playoff this postseason. That could give the Longhorns a brand new opportunity to get its true freshmen who are redshirting invaluable postseason live-game reps in that bright spotlight without losing the extra year of eligibility.

Here are four Longhorns true freshmen who are likely to be redshirted during the 2024 season.
