5 bold predictions for Texas going into the 2024 season
Texas loses two regular season games, but still makes the 12-team College Football Playoff
With the expanded 12-team Playoff field going into effect this upcoming postseason for college football, it is no longer out of the question for a two-loss team in the regular season with a strong win resume and tough strength of schedule to make it there.
Texas could theoretically lose two games against ranked opponents during the regular season and still be firmly in the conversation to make it back to the Playoff via one of the seven at-large bid spots this postseason.
The toughest games Texas faces this fall will be against Michigan in Week 2, and then the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs, No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners, and No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies in the SEC during the regular season. If Texas splits those four games with at least two victories, and doesn't have any other trip ups in other games where the Longhorns are expected to be favored this fall in the season, this team is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the 12-team Playoff.
Since Texas has so much depth at almost all position groups on both sides of the ball, and boasts a bevy of returning starters and impact proven players who can contribute from the portal, the floor on this squad is pretty high for this fall. Texas is set up well for success on the field this season.
It's just a matter of the Longhorns executing in these big games when it's facing the difficulty of playing high-end, talented teams week in and week out this season in the SEC.
