Jaylon Guilbeau, DB

The emergence of junior defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau is the biggest reason why the Longhorns defensive staff has so much versatility in terms of what they're able to do with cross-training and different looks in the secondary this fall. This is really the first time we've seen Guilbeau make it through a spring and fall camp fully healthy in the time he's spent on the Forty Acres since he first arrived during the 2022 offseason.

Guilbeau's rise this fall camp has allowed Pete Kwiatkowski and Co. to experiment with running senior defensive back Jahdae Barron at other positions to find the best combination of starters in the secondary in different situations and packages on defense.

If you had told me at the beginning of this offseason that Guilbeau was going to beat out Barron for the bulk of the first-team practice reps at the star position in fall camp, I probably would've dismissed the notion or thought.

But the type of scheme and philosophy PK and the Longhorns defensive staff employ in the secondary to rotate and get the best combination of DBs out on the field as much as possible in different live-game situations, it makes sense that Barron could be utilized elsewhere along with at star. Guilbeau's ability to hold his own in one-on-one coverage assignments and contest space sideline to sideline to get to the ball carrier at nickel make it a reality that Barron can play elsewhere this fall.
