A look at Texas's RB room after CJ Baxter Jr.'s injury
Tre Wisner
Sophomore running back Tre Wisner has come on strong for the Longhorns early in preseason camp. He hasn't shied away from contact and looks very confident running the football since Texas first put on more than just helmets and shorts in team drills since last weekend in practice.
Wisner played a prominent role for Texas's special teams coverage unit last season. He was a big part of Texas's kick and punt coverage, registering four solo tackles on special teams as a true freshman last fall for the Longhorns. He ranked second on the team in special teams solo and combined tackles (seven).
Last season, Wisner received limited live-game reps out of the backfield. His best performance came late in the game when Texas was up big in the regular season finale at home at DKR on Black Friday against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Wisner rushed for an impressive 60 yards on seven carries (averaging nearly nine yards per carry), with one rushing touchdown.
Wisner also got three carries for 11 rushing yards when the Longhorns had a commanding lead in the second half of the Big 12 Championship Game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
If Wisner shows the type of speed and field awareness running the football on offense that he did as a special teams gunner last season as a true freshman, he'll be a productive part of Texas's ground game this upcoming campaign in the SEC.
