Ethan Burke is a breakout player for Texas going into the 2024 season
By Kenneth Ball
Texas football will open its season on Aug. 31, hosting Colorado State at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. Sophomore edge rusher Ethan Burke, a standout on the Horns roster, could be primed for a breakout campaign and is worth watching closely this year.
Texas football EDGE Ethan Burke chose to stay home in Austin
Ethan was a two-year starter at the High school football powerhouse Austin Westlake, where he also excelled in lacrosse. He earned All-American and All-State honors in lacrosse and received Division I scholarship offers.
However, he ultimately chose to pursue college football and was nationally ranked as the 129th overall prospect and 14th-best edge rusher in the high school class of 2022. Ethan originally committed to the University of Michigan on Dec. 1, 2021, but just 14 days later, he flipped his commitment to the University of Texas.
Burke had a significant impact on Texas in his first two years
Since Burke got on the field at DKR, he has made an impact on his Longhorn debut against the University of Louisiana-Monroe; he recorded his career-high of three tackles ( two solo tackles) against the Warhawks. He finished his freshman campaign playing in 11 games, recording six tackles (five solo tackles) and 1.5 tackles for loss.
In his first year as a starter, Ethan's production skyrocketed, recording 41 tackles (21 solo), nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and a forced fumble with recovery in 13 games. With another year of experience, I believe Ethan's production and impact will flourish.
Burke's game and impact
Burke's running and passing game effectiveness has been crucial to his success and development as a player. He utilizes his long arms to keep separation from his blocker and plays with power and speed. With keen awareness, Ethan locates the opposing running back and tackles them for a tackle for loss.
Alternatively, he generates pressure on the opposing quarterback, forcing a turnover or sack. Over the past two years at Texas, his skills and technique have steadily improved, allowing him to continually expand his repertoire as a defensive lineman. Therefore, we should expect Ethan Burke to have a breakout season this year.
