One of Texas's most impactful transfer departures early in the 2024 offseason was senior defensive tackle Trill Carter. After contributing nearly 250 live-game snaps for Texas's interior defensive line rotation last season in the Big 12, Carter transferred to join head coach Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers during the winter portal window early this offseason.

When Carter originally committed to Texas via the transfer portal from the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Big Ten last offseason, he was brought in to be an experienced and proven defensive tackle impacting the trenches for a couple of years of his remaining eligibility.

After Carter transferred to Auburn early this offseason, Texas replaced that experience and depth along the defensive line with immediate impact grad transfers Jermayne Lole and Tia Savea.

It sounds like Carter wanted a more natural scheme fit and more consistent first-team reps along the interior defensive line for a power conference school. Last season, he played behind two defensive tackles picked in the top 40 in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft in the spring.

Texas losing its top two defensive tackles to the NFL Draft this spring opened up the competition for other linemen to take on new lead roles for the building rotation in the trenches for the SEC this fall. Carter knows he can play in the trenches in the SEC week in and week out, since he transferred to compete for the first-team defensive line reps at Auburn entering this spring earlier in the offseason.
