Texas football edged out the LSU Tigers to land a commitment from the touted four-star Missouri City (TX) Hightower defensive back Kade Phillips when he announced back in early July. But it appears that LSU and defensive backs coach Corey Raymond haven't thrown in the towel in this recruitment since Phillips committed to Texas over the Tigers last month.

LSU reportedly putting 4-Star Texas football DB commit Kade Phillips on flip watch late this summer

LSU has remained in consistent communication with Phillips since he committed to the Longhorns on July 6. And it now looks like LSU has Phillips on their radar as a possible flip late this summer on the recruiting trail in the 2025 class.

Raymond's consistent efforts to stay in contact with Phillips could give help LSU flip one of its top priority out-of-state defensive back targets in the 2025 class late this summer (per 247Sports). LSU has reportedly appealed to Phillips with their pitch for him to play cornerback instead of at the safety position.

Texas originally pitched for Phillips to play safety in college. But the Longhorns have also told him since that he can cross train to play both cornerback and safety at the next level, to figure out which position fits him best in Texas's secondary.

LSU's persistence and pitch for immediate playing time at cornerback has given Phillips something to think about after he committed to the Longhorns in early July.

Something to also consider here has been Texas's pursuit of the elite five-star Galveston (TX) Ball safety/athlete Jonah Williams. The No. 1 safety recruit in the nation in the 2025 class in the On3 Industry Ranking announces next week, and the Longhorns have been a trendy pick in that recruitment since the conclusion of summer visits in late July.

If Texas lands Williams' commitment when he announces on Aug. 24, that could make it more difficult for Phillips to compete for early live-game reps with the Longhorns' defensive backfield in the next couple of years in college.

Phillips is one of two defensive backs that committed to the Longhorns in the 2025 class this summer, along with three-star Missouri City (TX) Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Caleb Chester.
