Maalik Murphy pulling for his former team this season
Former Texas football quarterback Maalik Murphy transferred to the Duke Blue Devils this offseason for a chance to earn a starting job at a Power Four school for this upcoming season. Murphy spoke about his former team as a representative of the Blue Devils at the ACC Kickoff Event this week.
Duke QB Maalik Murphy believes Texas football can win the SEC in 2024
Murphy was emphatic about supporting his former team when he was asked whether he would be watching the Longhorns' games during the 2024 college football season (per On3).
"Definitely, definitely, definitely. I can’t wait. We have a lot of Friday games this year, so hopefully they don’t play on Fridays like we do and I’m able to watch them and follow them on Saturdays. So definitely my boys. There’s a couple of guys on the team I talk to every single day still. So I’m excited for them."
Since Duke has three Friday games this upcoming regular season, including two in ACC play, Murphy will have at least a few chances to watch Texas live on Saturday this fall.
Murphy is still very supportive of his teammates, who spoke very highly of him and his presence in the locker room in the last couple of years before he transferred from Texas to Duke during the winter portal window this offseason.
"Those are my guys ‘til this day. I just talked to Quinn last week. I talked to Arch the week before that. We stay in touch and I love those guys. At the end of the day I want to see them succeed. I want to see them win. And hopefully we get to meet up at the end of it all."
Last season at Texas, Murphy competed with then true freshman Arch Manning for the backup quarterback job behind redshirt sophomore Quinn Ewers. Murphy won the backup job coming out of training camp last preseason, and started two games when Ewers went down with a shoulder injury during Big 12 play in late October.
Murphy went 2-0 as a starter at Texas last season, including wins over the BYU Cougars and an important overtime top-25 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats.
If not for those two victories with Murphy as a starter, the Longhorns wouldn't have been able to win the Big 12 Championship or make an appearance in the College Football Playoff.
