Opportunity knocks for Texas RB Tre Wisner

CJ Baxter's injury is a significant loss for the Longhorns offense as they head into their first season in the SEC. Jaydon Blue will step in as the starter and get the majority of the carries in his absence. But sophomore Tre Wisner will also see his role expand in the Texas offense and he has the versatile skill set that will enable him to get more opportunities contribute offensively.

Texas football sophomore running back Tre Wisner was a three-star rated recruit coming out of Desoto High School in the class of 2023. He had double-digit offers from the likes of Florida, Oregon, Arkansas, SMU, and Houston. As a senior, Wisner was a key cog in the Desoto offense that won it's first of two 6A Division II state titles.

Texas football RB Tre Wisner ready to contribute to the backfield in 2024

While he excelled as a running back, Wisner was also featured as a receiving threat out of the backfield and he was flexed out as a receiver in certain offensive packages. He filled up the stat sheet during his senior season, rushing for over 700 yards and hauling in 35 grabs for nearly 500 yards. Wisner was ranked number 28 among running backs nationally and the number 68 overall player in the state of Texas by 247Sports as a senior.

Wisner embraced his role on special teams as a freshman at Texas

Steve Sarkisian gets the most out of the players on his roster. He puts an emphasis on getting his best athletes on the field in all phases of the game. Contributing to special teams enables young players to get on the field early at Texas.

Wisner came in as a highly rated recruit coming out of Desoto. Wisner saw an opportunity to see action early as a freshman and took advantage by contributing on the Longhorns special teams coverage units. He appeared in all 14 games for the Longhorns primarily playing special teams. Wisner saw limited action as a running back, rushing 12 times for 73 yards and a touchdown.

With the injury to Baxter, Wisner see his role expand and should get more touches on offense

With CJ Baxter out with a season-ending knee injury, Wisner will have a larger role in the Texas offense in 2024. Coach Sarkisian has mentioned Wisner on several occasions this offseason as one of the players he saw substantial improvement in during the spring and summer workouts. He will be the primary backup to Jaydon Blue in the Longhorns' running back rotation.

The 6-foot 200-pound sophomore is a slasher who runs with power between tackles. He has excellent short-area quickness, and Wisner has the speed to make a house call for six. I think Wisner will bring the most value in the passing game because of his ability to be an asset. He is a sure-handed receiver out of the backfield. The Longhorns will be able to utilized him in the screen game, he can run routes like a receiver and he has the shiftiness in the open field to make defenders miss.

Injuries are apart of the game and the teams that have the depth to withstand those injures are the ones who remain successful in the long run. Sarkisian has been on record, stating that this is the most talented and deep Texas roster that he has had in his tenure.

Wisner is the type of player who fits the mold of the next man up in the Texas running back rotation. He will get his opportunity to get his share of carries this season. Look for Wisner to bring his Swiss army knife skill set to the Texas backfield this season and give them a versatile presence offensively.
