Special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and the Longhorns have some promising depth in the tight end room this spring. But the upside and true developed depth are still lacking at tight end since the freshmen in this group are so raw.

Thus, we've seen heavy doses of senior tight ends Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis getting the first and second-team reps in team drills for the Longhorns so far in spring camp. Helm is the lone returning starter at tight end for the Longhorns. He is Texas's best and most proven blocker and a reliable receiver in two tight-end sets on offense.

Texas also has former Alabama junior transfer tight end Amari Niblack, who has worked to get more of the first and second-team reps in spring practice, as expected in the last couple of weeks.

Even true freshman early enrollee Jordan Washington has earned some second-team reps with a good showing during his first spring camp at Texas.

If the expected roster attrition due to the scholarship limits has any impact on the tight end room, Davis could be the casualty from the group.

Davis was already very close to submitting his paperwork to enter the portal early this offseason. It took some quick retention efforts from the coaching staff to keep him around on campus entering spring camp this semester.

I will say that Davis is probably having his best spring during his time on the Forty Acres during the four years of his career in college. He's been more involved and reliable in blocking and receiver drills during the simulated live-game action in practice, and his experience getting practice reps in the last few years on the 40 has proven to be valuable for the younger players at tight end.
