Predicting Texas's next transfer after EDGE Billy Walton
Savion Red, RB
Another position group that has restocked the cupboard regarding depth and talent this offseason is running back. Tashard Choice did a tremendous job adding two talented future impact running backs via high school recruiting in the 2024 class in true freshman early enrollees Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark.
Texas also returns a potent and talented top duo of running backs this spring in sophomore CJ Baxter Jr. and junior Jaydon Blue. Baxter and Blue are likely to split the workload among the top two backs for Texas's offense in the SEC this upcoming season.
A key battle in the running back room this spring is the competition for the third-team reps in the backfield. Clark, Gibson, sophomore Tre Wisner, and junior Savion Red have all been vying for third-team reps at running back since the start of spring ball.
The way things have been trending in spring practice in the last couple of weeks, Wisner looks like the favorite to get that third spot in the running back pecking order entering summer workouts and preseason camp. Clark also has shown the potential to contribute early as the season progresses if he continues to develop at a fast rate entering the fall.
Red has been put in a tough spot this spring, as the 5-foot-10 and 240-pound back hasn't consistently cracked the top three group of rushers in practice or the last two scrimmages.
Last season, Red was a big part of Texas's offense in short-yardage and goalline packages. Sarkisian and the Longhorns utilized Red in the "Redcat package" to take advantage of his power running the ball and versatility. The final week of spring ball and summer workouts will be a key stretch for Red as he looks to climb the running back depth chart before the start of preseason camp.
