While at Texas, Choate helped to improve the Texas run defense once again as well as evolving the Horns’ red-zone defense.

Last season, under Choate’s leadership, the Longhorns rose to the No. 3 nationally-ranked run defense and the No. 4 nationall-ranked red zone defense.

However, Choate’s coaching decisions led a bit to be desired when it came to scoring and passing defense.

Choate’s shortcomings were seen throughout the year and the team parted ways with its defensive coordinator before the season ended.

In the College Football Playoffs semifinals, the Longhorns (still led by Choate) allowed the Washington Huskies to score 37 points for the win.
