Vance Bedford was former Texas head coach Charlie Strong’s longtime go-to man and the same was true with the Longhorns.

When Strong was named as Texas’ head coach, he named Bedford as his defensive coordinator who lasted in the position of an abysmal three seasons.

In October 2016, Strong announced that Bedford would be demoted and the head coach would be handling the defensive coordinator role.

At the end of Bedford’s DC stint, the Longhorns’ defense ranked last in the Big 12, averaging over 38 points allowed per game. Bedford’s defensive unit also allowed 47 points or more in three of its first four games that season.
