Another school that is a possibility to throw their hat in the ring in this portal recruitment for Downs is the Texas Longhorns. Texas is another school that is expected to be a national contender in 2024.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian has the Longhorns in a prime position to be a contender in the SEC in their first year competing in the conference this upcoming season. Texas returns key pieces returning on both sides of the ball who could lead this team back to the Playoff in 2024, namely redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers and senior defensive back Jahdae Barron.

Texas has almost completely turned over the safety room early this offseason to try and upgrade the secondary upon entering the SEC in 2024. Multiple upperclassmen safeties with starting experience for the Longhorns left the program via the transfer portal during the December window.

The Longhorns have also added key pieces to the secondary via high school and portal recruiting in the last month or so, such as former Clemson Tigers junior safety transfer Andrew Mukuba and five-star safety Xavier Filsaime.

Safeties coach Blake Gideon and the Longhorns would obviously love to have Downs on campus if he were willing to take a visit early this offseason. If he wanted to come to the Forty Acres, he would have an immediate impact on this safety room and help to drastically upgrade the secondary heading into the SEC in 2024.

Among the four schools on this list, Texas is probably the least likely destination for Downs. But Sarkisian and the Longhorns have been red-hot with their portal recruiting lately and have already landed two Alabama transfers in linebacker Kendrick Blackshire and wide receiver Isaiah Bond.

It's not out of the question that Downs would at least entertain the possibility of communicating with Texas's staff after putting his name in the portal on Jan. 17.
