Georgia

The early favorite to land Downs' commitment in the portal this offseason is Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart.

Georgia makes sense for Downs for multiple reasons. The Freshman All-American is from Hoschton, GA, which is roughly 30 miles up the road north west from the University of Georgia and Athens.

Smart and the Bulldogs were also one of the top schools involved in Downs' recruitment out of high school. Georgia was one of the schools that Downs visited most frequently, especially since it was an easy trip right down the road for him and his family from Hoschton.

Downs also officially visited Georgia along with Alabama, Ohio State, and Notre Dame during the 2022 offseason.

Downs reportedly wants to play for coaches with a championship pedigree and with a defense that is ready to be one of the top units nationally in 2024.

Georgia checks both of those boxes since Smart has already won two titles in the last three years, and co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has coached some of the nation's best defenses over his more than two decades as a defensive play-caller.

If Downs committed to Georgia in the portal this offseason, Smart and the Bulldogs would unquestionably have one of the top defensive units in all of college football if they didn't already. Downs would also further solidify Georgia's status as potentially the title favorite entering the 2024 season.
