'Speculation growing' regarding David Pierce's job status
Following a disappointing early exit from the Big 12 Tournament this week, it appears that Texas baseball head coach David Pierce's seat is heating up ahead of the 2024 offseason.
Texas baseball HC David Pierce on the hot seat in 2024?
Orangebloods reported on May 24 (subscriber content) that "speculation continues to grow" regarding Pierce's job status entering the college baseball postseason. It was specifically noted in this report that the concerns regarding Pierce's job status was before Texas went 0-2 in two contests in the Big 12 Tournament earlier this week.
You'd have to imagine the pressure has only ramped up on Pierce since the disappointment coming out of the Big 12 Tournament in Arlington.
It sounds like Pierce's seat will be extremely hot entering the offseason if Texas doesn't return to Omaha and the College World Series this postseason.
Pierce and the Longhorns have fallen short of expectations in the Big 12 this season. After Texas posted a 35-22 (20-10 Big 12) record during the regular season and the conference tournament, the Longhorns are well outside the projected hosts for regionals this postseason.
Texas also fell short of winning the Big 12 title during the regular season or in the conference tournament, simultaneous to likely not being a regional host, for the first time since 2019. The path for Texas to reach Omaha and the College World Series for the first time since 2022 also looks like an uphill battle this coming postseason.
The Longhorns are likely going to be unranked entering the postseason after being ranked No. 16 in the preseason D1Baseball poll. Texas has a chance to get back in the final polls for the 2024 season if they can make a deep postseason run.
