Jalin Flores and Texas baseball seeking second straight win vs. Kansas on Friday
Late-game heroics from pinch-hitter Casey Borba and Jalin Flores lifted the Longhorns to a walk-off win over the Jayhawks in the series opener on May 16. Borba tied the game for the Longhorns at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning with a pinch-hit solo shot.
Flores sealed the victory for the Longhorns with a walk-off double for their 33rd win of the season and 18th in Big 12 play.
Texas had a chance to close out the victory much sooner than the bottom of the ninth inning. But Kansas rallied to score two runs and take their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth.
Fortunately, Borba and Flores had just enough magic left in the bats to get Texas an important clutch win to kick off this series against the Jayhawks.
Texas will be looking to continue this offensive momentum it found late in the game on May 16 against Kansas to spark get the win and take the series on May 17.
A win in Game 2 of this series could get Texas closer to locking up the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 for the conference tournament next week. Texas currently sits in a tie for second place in the Big 12 standings with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, with the Oklahoma Sooners having already locked up the Big 12 regular season title last weekend.
Oklahoma State boasts a Big 12 record of 17-9 entering its three-game series this weekend against the Houston Cougars.
Getting the call on the mound for the Longhorns on May 17 in Game 2 against Kansas is right-hander Max Grubbs. The 6-foot-1 sophomore Grubbs is seeking his second consecutive win in Big 12 play after he delivered a quality start in a victory over the UCF Knights on the road last weekend.
The first pitch time between Texas and Kansas on May 17 is 6:30 p.m. CT at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
