Per a report from On3's Hayes Fawcett on social media on April 15, Texas football redshirt freshman edge rusher Billy Walton plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Texas football second-year EDGE Billy Walton enters the transfer portal

The 6-foot-3 and 229-pound edge rusher Walton has four years of eligibility remaining.

Walton is the third former Longhorns player to announce their intention to enter the transfer portal this spring. The spring portal window opens for underclassmen just after midnight on April 16.

The other two former Longhorns players who entered the portal with the spring window approaching are redshirt freshman offensive lineman Payton Kirkland and redshirt freshman linebacker S'Maje Burrell.

Walton took defensive snaps in two games during his true freshman campaign in 2023. He took three defensive snaps in Texas's Week 3 win at home over the Wyoming Cowboys and a dozen defensive snaps in the win in the Big 12 opener over the Baylor Bears on the road (per PFF).

Walton didn't register any stats in the two games he played last season.

Hailing from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, TX, Walton signed with the Longhorns as a three-star EDGE recruit in the 2023 class. He ranked as the No. 506 prospect nationally in the 2023 class in the 247Sports Composite, No. 49 edge rusher, and No. 80 out of Texas.

Texas is now down to 86 scholarship players less than 24 hours before the spring portal window opens on April 16. That puts the Longhorns one player above the scholarship limit, not including any potential portal targets Texas looks at to fill needs on the roster this spring.
