Texas Football: An In-Depth Look at the Longhorns Secondary
By Shane Black
Field Corner
The departure of Brooks has left the field corner position in a bit of flux as we hit the summer months.
Wake Forest transfer Gavin Holmes returns for his second season in Austin after backing up Brooks last season. Holmes started two games in 2023 and, according to PFF, had the second-best coverage grade on the team.
Holmes will compete with the newly signed Cole in the fall.
Cole finished with 38 tackles,10 passes defended, and three interceptions last season at SJSU. He was ranked as the No. 5 cornerback in the transfer cycle, according to On3. Expect Cole and Holmes to split snaps next season.
Boundary Corner
Boundary corner is another spot in the secondary where Texas has a bonafide stud starter in sophomore Malik Muhammad. The five-star started the final two games of the season for Texas and finished with the highest coverage on the team, according to PFF.
Muhammad's growth has been rapid. Coach Sark loves his playmaking ability and willingness to attack the ball. He should be a star for Texas.
There will be a big-time fall camp battle for reps behind Muhammad.
Redshirt freshman Warren Roberson has cross-trained at the position and will be given a chance to win the backup spot. Freshman Kobe Black turned heads this spring and will also have an opportunity to play his way into the rotation this fall. This is a battle we will continue to monitor.
