Texas Football: Bama on track to flip 4-Star ATH commit Aeryn Hampton
Signing day drama is here for Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian in the 2024 class. On Dec. 20, Texas has already signed most of its commitments in the 2024 recruiting class just a few hours into the day. But there are a handful of holdouts due to pursuits from other competing schools on the recruiting trail.
As of the writing of this article on the morning of Dec. 20, the two notable holdouts among the high school recruits committed to the Longhorns in the 2024 class are five-star St. Louis University (MO) wide receiver Ryan Wingo and four-star Daingerfield (TX) athlete Aeryn Hampton.
Wingo has yet to sign his letter of intent with the Mizzou Tigers and Nebraska Cornhuskers making last-minute pushes to flip his commitment from Texas.
4-Star Texas football ATH commit Aeryn Hampton reportedly expected to sign with Alabama
Hampton, meanwhile, is a bit of a different story. Steve Wiltfong reported on Dec. 19 that Hampton is expected to flip his commitment from Texas to the Alabama Crimson Tide during his signing day ceremony at Daingerfield High School on Dec. 20 at 12 noon CT.
Hampton's recruitment has been one of the biggest roller coaster rides of this cycle for the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide. If and when he does decommit from Texas to sign with Alabama on Dec. 20, it will be the third time he's decommitted since 2021.
He was originally committed to the Baylor Bears in late 2021 and early 2022. Then, Texas came knocking early in the 2022 offseason and Hampton wound up flipping from Baylor to the Longhorns in mid-February.
The first time that Hampton's recruitment came full circle for the Longhorns was last fall. Hampton decommitted from Texas roughly eight or nine months after he originally pledged to the Longhorns. But he would wind up re-committing to Texas during the summer of 2023.
He picked Texas over Alabama during the summer in his second commitment to the Longhorns.
But Alabama remained in pursuit of Hampton on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class throughout the fall. Head coach Nick Saban even visited Hampton's school in the last month.
As of the late morning of Dec. 20, Texas has signed 20 of its 22 commitments in the 2024 class. Texas's 2024 class ranks fourth nationally in the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings and third in the SEC behind Alabama and the Georgia Bulldogs.
