Texas has targeted multiple edge rushers in the portal since the December window opened a couple of weeks ago. Texas made contact with the senior Florida Gators EDGE transfer Princely Umanmielen and Tennessee Volunteers senior transfer Tyler Baron in the last 10 days or so.

But Ole Miss snagged portal commitments in the last few days from both Umanmielen and Baron, forcing Texas to look elsewhere for help at the EDGE position heading into the offseason.

Texas is still evaluating other options at the EDGE position in the portal, even after hosting Moore for a visit last weekend. One potential option to consider among edge rushers in the portal with proven Power Five experience is the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore transfer Marvin Jones Jr.

From what's been reported, there hasn't been any contact between Jones and Texas. But he is the type of high-end talent at the EDGE position who has proven Power Five experience and NFL upside that Texas could try and tap into for a couple of seasons.

As an elite talent with some proven production as a pass rusher in the SEC in the last two years, Jones could be a viable option to help upgrade the EDGE position for the Longhorns. At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Jones checks out physically as a high-upside player who could compete for a spot on the two-deep right away at Texas.

Texas showed interest in Jones during his recruitment out of high school in the 2022 class.

Jones entered the portal on Dec. 12. He spent two seasons at Georgia, registering 5.5 tackles for loss, nine quarterback pressures, and two sacks in a rotational role along the defensive front for head coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs.

Jones is one of the many former five-star recruits on the Georgia defense who entered the portal in this December window after getting lost in the shuffle on the two-deep in the last couple of seasons.

The school that has the most buzz in this portal recruitment is the Florida State Seminoles. Jones showed up in Tallahassee this weekend for a visit to Florida State. Head coach Mike Norvell and the Noles have been aggressive with EDGE recruiting in the portal in the last couple of offseasons.

So, if Texas was to theoretically throw its hat in the ring with Jones, it would need to make that move soon. I also expect Texas to be pretty patient with its evaluations in the portal at the EDGE position.
