Texas Football: Sarkisian, UT 'close' to contract extension
Amid various discussions that Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian was in the running to take the head coaching vacancy with the Alabama Crimson Tide, he reaffirmed his loyalty to UT on Jan. 12. A post on the Texas Football Twitter/X account on Jan. 12 tagged Sarkisian, saying "just getting started" with the horns up hand sign emoji.
Texas was already in discussions with Sarkisian regarding a contract extension in the last week or so before longtime legendary head coach Nick Saban announced his retirement a couple of days ago.

The Longhorns appear to be getting closer to an agreement with Sarkisian on a contract extension late this week. Horns247 reported on Jan. 12 that Sarkisian and Texas are "close to agreement on a contract extension and raise".
Sarkisian just finished the third year of the six year contract he signed, worth $34.2 million, when Texas hired him to be the head coach early in the 2021 offseason.
Sarkisian led Texas to the College Football Playoff in just his third year as head coach
Texas accomplished many of its preseason goals, and quite a bit more, during the final year in the Big 12. This past season, Sarkisian led the Longhorns to the program's first Big 12 title since 2009 and Texas's first appearance in the College Football Playoff.
After going just 5-7, and missing postseason eligibility, in his first year at Texas in 2021, Sarkisian has brought the Longhorns to the level of a national contender in just a few seasons.

Entering its first season in the SEC in 2024, Sarkisian and the Longhorns appear to be conference and national title contenders. The announcement on Jan. 11 of the return of redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers for his third year at Texas in 2024 cemented the Longhorns' status as a top contender in the SEC next fall.
